Kyren Wilson couldn't help but chuckle at Shaun Murphy's expense after the Magician's failed 147 attempt at the Masters. Murphy, who adamantly claims to be one of the few to have struck the trifecta of a maximum in snooker, a nine-darter in darts, and a hole-in-one in golf, had an opportunity to complete his sport's ultimate challenge. Having amassed a break of 120 in his winning leg over Neil Robertson, a 147 looked inevitable at Alexandra Palace.

The 42-year-old easily potted the black and looked to have positioned the ball on the yellow perfectly. However, there was not enough power in his effort, resulting in the cue ball finishing directly behind the blue. He went for an audacious fluke shot to try and maintain his chances of a maximum, but the cue ball ricocheted off the cushions and finished in the bottom right pocket. After the match, Wilson could not stop himself from poking fun at Murphy.

Wilson, who is working as a pundit for the BBC's coverage of the Masters, said: "What a wally. What a wally. Fancy snookering yourself on the blue.". Despite his initial jest, Wilson praised Murphy's stellar performance, which saw him overcome Robertson 6-2 with breaks of 82, 90 and 120. Wilson added: "What an effort, what a fantastic performance.

"Neil will be walking away there thinking, 'I didn't do too much wrong'. Shaun's all round matchplay was fantastic, his break building was great, it would have been the icing on the cake to have a 147 there.". In a candid post-match interview, Murphy expressed his disappointment over the failed maximum finish that would have made a perfect birthday present for his mother.
