Rebellion brings its part-sneaking, part-sniping sandbox assassin simulator back – this time with a new war hero taking point. You have to admire a video game franchise that does (mostly) one thing and does it well. Such is the case with Sniper Elite, which has taken the time over five main entries to slowly refine its formula, empowering players with a myriad of ways to sneak, snipe, and espionage their way through all kinds of thrilling World War 2 scenarios. The same is very much true with new spin-off, Sniper Elite: Resistance, which isn’t so much a full-blown upgrade on Sniper Elite 5, but rather a continuation of this entry’s best strengths with some slightly new ways to play tactically and even more sprawling stealth sandboxes to do it across. Sniper Elite: Resistance is a grand old way to meticulously kill Nazis, even if it mostly feels like an incremental update to what’s come before, as opposed to a giant leap.

The main difference this time around is that long-time Sniper Elite protagonist, Karl Fairburne, is nowhere to be seen. With Resistance’s events taking place concurrently to those previously seen in Sniper Elite 5, stepping up to the leading man role this time is fan-favourite Special Operations commando, Harry Hawker, who – up until now – had been previously reserved as players’ trusty partner in co-op mode. I wish I could say that developer Rebellion used this sharp change of protagonist as a good excuse to bring a breath of fresh air to the way Sniper Elite tells its story, or allows you to go about your sniping business. Sadly, in both areas, while there is an attempt to relay an engrossing plot involving the need to thwart Germany’s occupation of France circa 1944 being told here, rarely did I care about the context established for my actions.
