A teacher who told a pupil to “f**k off” has told an education board it was in response to being called a “fat c**t” by the teen in a school corridor. Morgan Jones claimed he was scared as the "aggressive" year 11 pupil came towards him "red-faced" as if he was going to hit him. The former head of religious studies at Ysgol Rhiwabon in Wrexham told the professional standards hearing he "reacted badly in the heat of the moment".

The teacher, who was 28 at the time, described the scene as he "apologised deeply" for allegations of acting in an “inappropriate manner” towards three other pupils. The fitness to practise panel heard Mr Jones admit he told a year eight pupil he was a “tramp” and “should go back to the special class”, shouted at another learner to “shut your face” and referred to a third as “a freak”.

Mr Jones said he had felt unsupported in the school for 11 to 16-year-olds, where he claimed there was no effective policy in the face of challenging behaviour. He said 11 of the 23 pupils in his year eight form were on behaviour reports at the time he told one of them he was “a tramp”. The panel heard how the pupil he called “a tramp” took most of his lessons at the school’s special resource base and was “challenging”.

On the day in question the boy had acted up in the low ability year eight class where most of the pupils had a reading age of six, despite being aged 12 or 13. The boy had come to class late, asked for a pen, made rude references to the teacher’s weight asking if he had “sunk the Titanic” or ”ate the whole menu in Burger King” before calling the teacher a tramp. Mr Jones told the panel he retorted in a jokey way and told the pupil he was a tramp himself, before telling him to leave the room.
