A teenager claims she dropped out of a beauty course after being told she would have to undergo a bikini wax - in front of 30 classmates. Inayah Lynch forked out £200 for her uniform and kit for the Beauty Therapy Level 2 course at Barnsley College in South Yorkshire. But the 16-year-old was horrified to learn she would need to "experience" the treatment in front of the others on her course. Inayah, from Huddersfield, raised her concerns with mum Safiyah Guy, 39, who encouraged her to refuse the wax if she was uncomfortable.
But after declining the procedure, Inayah claims she was told she would have to drop out. "The wax had to be performed in the beauty rooms. There are curtains but we aren't allowed to have the curtains closed so it would have been in front of the whole class, which is around 30 people.
"That would have been really embarrassing. You know how young girls can be, they can be judgemental about these things. Having to do that in front of loads of girls that I don't know and hadn't been able to form a relationship yet was really strange. I was being forced to do something that I didn't want to do.
"I raised it with my teacher and I was dismissed. It was really difficult, it knocked my confidence so much. I had a passion for beauty and wanted to do the course but hearing negativity from my tutors and college made me re-think my future.". In a recorded phone conversation between Inayah's mum and one of the teachers, the family are informed she must undergo the procedure or leave the course. When asked if the college expected a 16-year-old girl to undergo a bikini wax, the professor can be heard saying: "Yeah, we are yeah. If you have a problem with it then maybe she needs to look for a different programme.".
