The Masked Singer UK star Bush’s costume had to go through important changes before the scraggly singer was poised to perform on the ITV series. The most bonkers show on TV has been delighting fans yet again during the 2025 season, with spectacular performances from characters including Kingfisher, Snail, Bear, Dressed Crab and Teeth.
While viewers are often left in awe by the musical talents of the celebrities hiding under the masks, they’re similarly amazed by the incredible outfits that they wear when they take to the stage. Metro recently spoke to The Masked Singer UK costume designer Tim Simpson, managing director of Plunge Creations, who provided fascinating behind-the-scenes insights into how this year’s characters were created.
He explained how one costume in particular, Bush, required a big change, as initially it wasn’t quite nailing the ‘right look’ for the character. ‘We had to grow a new set of foliage for Bush,’ before going into more detail and revealing how the idea for Bush first came about… among adults who found the name highly amusing.
‘Bush was a silly idea from one of the production team who just thought, wouldn’t it be funny to have a character called Bush for reasons that us grown-ups know very well.’. Tim continued, outlining how the shape of the singer’s costume meant that it was easier for the celebrity who was concealed underneath to keep their identity a secret.
‘Once I sketched it up, it was like, yeah, this is going to be funny, and this will be a fun character to be in. Because it disguises the complete body shape – you’re looking at a giant bush with eyes – nobody’s going to know who’s in there. That’s part of the fun with it,’ he said.
