Two Arsenal stars return to training ahead of huge Man City showdown

Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino have returned to training ahead of Arsenal’s double header against Girona and Manchester City this week. The midfield duo missed the Gunners’ trip to Molineux on Saturday with Odegaard ruled out through illness. Merino meanwhile picked up a knock in training the day before the game, where Arsenal sealed victory courtesy of Riccardo Calafiori’s second-half strike.

Arsenal have effectively confirmed their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League and will end the league phase of the competition away to Spanish side Girona on Wednesday night. City come to the capital on Sunday for another huge showdown between the two clubs with Odegaard and Merino both pictured back training with the squad on Tuesday morning.

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus remain sidelined with Ben White still working his way back to fitness. Myles Lewis-Skelly will be available for Wednesday’s clash in Spain but the 18-year-old is facing a three-match suspension following his controversial red card against Wolves.
That dismissal is set to rule him out of games against City, the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle United and the trip to Leicester. Lewis-Skelly was shown a straight red by Michael Oliver at Molineux with VAR sticking with his on-field decision.
Speaking after the match, Mikel Arteta believed it was such a clear and obvious error that the club may not even have to appeal to get the decision overturned. Arteta said: ‘That’s for the club to decide what is the best decision. It’s that obvious that maybe we don’t even need to [put in an appeal].
