A new snow map suggests Britain as a whole will be blasted by a huge 742-mile polar vortex as the mercury plummets to a freezing -14C. Most of the UK is likely to be on the receiving end of a temperature drop and may even see signs of snowy weather in the coming days, according to WXCharts. The map suggests sub-zero temperatures will be felt in much of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Blasts of snow may also cover the country with accumulation expected in Newcastle and Edinburgh.

Northern parts of the country are also set to experience some frigid temperatures, with areas like Portree and Fort William dropping to a brutal -14C. Weather experts are now warning the cold snap could continue into January. Snowy conditions in Britain may remain for 14 days if the weather maps' predictions hold firm, with freezing temperatures expected after the 742-mile polar blast.

Jim Dale, a meteorologist with British Weather Services said: "The cold/snow conditions kicks in New Years Eve and unwinds southwards on New Years’ Day and beyond. It is going to be much colder everywhere, but most snow confined to northern UK. At first, taking time to hit the south but it’s not out of the question. It is going to be certainly a bitterly cold start to 2025.".

Warnings from Mr Dale come as the Met Office urges people to prepare for a series of yellow weather warnings. According to the forecaster, the beginning of the New Year would see some unsettled weather conditions with some "danger to life" warnings issued, the Express reported. A long-range forecast from the Met warns of "rain and sleet" across the north as well as showery conditions in other parts of the country.
