PUT on your Smarty pants for the Unibet Veterans’ Chase Final. SMARTY WILD (3.00) was pulled up on his return from nearly two years off the track at Haydock last month but he’s well handicapped on his best form. He’s always been much better on right-handed tracks, so it’s not hard to expect him to put in a significantly-improved performance around Sandown.

The likely decent pace should help and it’s also good to see the training partnership of Philip Hobbs and Johnson White banging in the winners. Have 2pts each-way at 14-1. Sky Bet is paying out on four places. SPIRITS BAY (3.35) was a progressive novice hurdler last season and he looks over-priced in the closing race on the card.

He travelled powerfully when landing back-to-back wins at Exeter and there was loads of promise in his return to action at Cheltenham last month. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ hope was a bit too enthusiastic early on and he made up his ground from the rear too quickly.

That move took him into a challenging position going to the final hurdle but his exertions told on the run-in. With the freshness knocked out of him and a smoother run through the race, he should last much longer this time. Have 2pts each-way at 9-1. Earlier in the afternoon, JUPITER DU GITE (1.50) should make them all go.

He faces competition for the frontrunner’s role but it will be a brave one to take him on in the early stages. His stamina ran out over 3m at this track last month and he will be much happier returned to 2m4f. He’s still got plenty of potential and Gary Moore – now training in partnership with his son Josh – has stacks of winners around Sandown. Have 2pts win at 7-1.
