Wayne Rooney admitted he would consider resigning as Plymouth Argyle manager after his side slumped to yet another defeat on Sunday. Plymouth are bottom of the Championship and four points from safety following their damaging 2-0 loss against fellow strugglers Oxford. The Pilgrims have just one win in their last 14 matches and have an absolutely dismal away record which is threatening to drag them into League One.
Rooney’s side have now lost 11 of their 13 away games, including all of their last five, scoring three and conceding 35 on the road. The 39-year-old took over in May and has overseen just five wins from 25 games altogether and there was anger in the away end at the Kassam Stadium on Sunday.
The former Manchester United and England striker has previously been sacked by Derby, DC United and Birmingham City and it now seems that the writing is on the wall at Plymouth too. “I think you have to look at every possible outcome. I think that's normal with the results we are going through,” he told Plymouth Live when asked if he would consider his position.
“You have to feel you can turn it around, have you got the players to turn it around. Can I turn it around? Can the coaches turn it around? That's all stuff we really have to look at.”. Asked if he was worried about being sacked, Rooney said: "That's a question for the board. I understand how football works. All I can do is keep trying to work as hard as I can. It's difficult, of course it is, but that's part of the game. It's frustrating.
