A top pharmacist has explained the symptoms of a lesser-known virus that is sweeping the UK. With cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) rising, Superdrug’s Pharmacy Superintendent Niamh McMillan has also said how to prevent yourself getting it. She explained that HMPV is a respiratory virus that can cause symptoms similar to the common cold, or flu. She said it was "a highly contagious virus that primarily spreads through droplets in the air when someone coughs and sneezes".
HMPV can also be spread via surfaces touched by contaminated hands. It can affect people of all ages, but those most at risk include young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, she said. The symptoms are similar to those of a cold or flu. They usually appear three to six days after exposure.
Niamh said: “Symptoms to be aware of include a cough, runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, body aches, headaches and a high temperature. In more severe cases, HMPV can lead to more severe health concerns such as bronchitis, bronchiolitis and pneumonia, with sufferers experiencing breathing difficulties, chest pain, dizziness, severe fatigue and shortness of breath. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek urgent medical attention.”.
The best way to protect yourself and others from HMPV is by following basic hygiene practices and taking extra precautions during the colder winter months. Niamh said: “Regular hand washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs.”.
