Following the death of acclaimed auteur David Lynch, fans the world over are seeking out his work. The 78-year-old American filmmaker died after previously sharing an emphysema diagnosis. News of his passing was announced on his official Facebook page earlier this week.

Lynch was known for his love of the weird and wonderful, showcased in his quirky body of work. Among his most lauded works were Mulholland Drive, Dune, Eraserhead and Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks, in particular, developed a cult following after the show hit screens and followed FBI agent Dale Cooper (played by Kyle MacLachlan) investigating the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee).

However, the FBI agent soon found himself immersed in a strange world with supernatural elements as Lynch drew on both horror and American daytime soap tropes in his storytelling. Twin Peaks ran for two seasons on ABC before getting cancelled, but was followed up in 1992 with the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.

Later in 2017, Twin Peaks was rebooted on Showtime and picked up 25 years after the events of the original series. Season three saw star MacLachlan reprise his iconic role with Twin Peaks creators Lynch and Mark Frost back on directing and writing duties.

The final season attracted all-round praise for its unorthodox narrative, cinematography and cast performances. Many described it as the best show of 2017 with some critics going so far as to name it the best show of the decade. Those in the UK can watch Twin Peaks on streaming platform Paramount+, but you will need a subscription with prices starting at £4.99 per month.
