Anthony Mundine has announced that he'll be making a surprise comeback to the boxing ring despite hanging up his gloves back in 2021. The controversial boxer was brutally knocked to the canvas twice inside the opening round of his bout against Michael Zerafa back in 2021.
It was his third successive defeat on the bounce, with the 49-year-old subsequently called time on his career, stating: 'Definitely, that's it for me 'Even if I won I would have hung them [his gloves] up. I just don't have the heart to do it any more.'.
But in a surprising U-turn, it appears the three-time world champion, who has claimed titles across three different weight divisions, can't stay away from the ring for too long. On Wednesday, Aussie boxing promoters Fight Fanatics announced Mundine would be returning to the ring to take on Prince Bunjaku in a six-round exhibition match on March 15.
The pair will headline the event in Hobart, with Fight Fanatics set to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Peter Mac Hospital in Melbourne. Mundine took to Instagram to speak out on his excitement for the fight. Anthony Mundine is set to step back into the boxing ring, despite announcing his retirement back in 2021.
Bunjaku holds a 17-0 record and joined in the Instagram story, stating that the pair were 'going going to put some razzle-dazzle on'. Mundine announced he'd be retiring from boxing after he was brutally beaten by Michael Zerafa back in 2021.
