The driver of a Land Rover Defender which crashed into a southwest London school, killing two schoolgirls, has been rearrested after detectives reopened the investigation into the incident. Schoolgirls Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau, both eight, died after the vehicle smashed into the Study Prep school in Wimbledon, south-west London, on July 6, 2023. The two were celebrating the end of summer term at the time. The Metropolitan Police said in a statement released today that they have arrested the 48-year-old driver on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving as part of an ongoing investigation.

It is the woman's second arrest since the initial crash nearly two years ago, with the first having taken place at the scene on July 6. In June last year, the Metropolitan Police Roads and Transport Policing Command (RTPC) found the driver had suffered an epileptic seizure, and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the driver should face no further action.

But the girls’ families said they were unconvinced the investigation had been carried out thoroughly, and in October the Specialist Crime Review Group (SCRG) said it would reopen its inquiry. That review identified lines of enquiry which required further examination.

In October the investigation was moved to the Specialist Crime Command, under Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford. He leads a team who have since been pursuing new lines of enquiry identified by a review. The force said that following concerns raised by the girls’ families, it had carried out its own review of the case and found lines of inquiry that “required further examination”.
