Premier League club Wolves have sacked their head coach Gary O’Neil after Saturday’s 1-2 home defeat to Ipswich Town. The costly result against their relegation rivals leaves Wolves 19th in the table – second bottom – on just nine points after 16 games.

Ugly scenes broke out after the full-time whistle at Molineux with Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri sent off in the tunnel for clashing with Wes Burns, while his teammate Matheus Cunha was seen fighting with Ipswich’s security team. It marked a new low point for Wolves and the club have now decided to part ways with O’Neil, confirming the news in a statement on Sunday.

‘We’re very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team the best of luck for the future,’ Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said. O’Neil, who previously managed AFC Bournemouth in the top-flight, took the Wolves job in August 2023, replacing Julen Lopetegui.

The 41-year-old guided Wolves to a 14th-placed finish last term – but this season has been a disaster – with the West Midlands side have won only two out of 16 league games under the management of O’Neil. Wolves will now begin the search for his replacement as they fight to keep their spot in the top flight of English football.

The Premier League strugglers, who sold star players Pedro Neto and Max Kilman in the most recent summer transfer window, are currently four points adrift of 17th-placed Crystal Palace. Wolves are back in action on Sunday, December 22 as they face 16th-placed Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in another huge match.
