A catalogue of hairpieces were seized by police from a suspected conwoman who allegedly used them to impersonate clients while taking their British citizenship tests. Wigs of different colours and styles were confiscated by officers in the dramatic dawn raid on the flat in Enfield, North London. But the collection was not an impressive fancy dress array, rather potential evidence in a suspected fraud case.
The 61-year-old suspect is alleged to have used the wigs as disguises when taking the Life in the UK test - a 24-question quiz required from anyone looking to obtain UK citizenship or leave to remain. The questions tackle subjects from UK history, customs and traditions to culture and our political system.
The unnamed suspect is alleged to have used the hairpieces to pass herself off as 14 different people - both male and female - at multiple test centres between June 2022 and August 2023. She was investigated by Immigration Enforcement Criminal and Financial Investigators at the Home Office.
Inspector Phillip Parr said a “complex investigation” had “put a stop to this dangerous scheme”. Mr Parr said: “This individual is believed to have orchestrated a pre-meditated plan to avoid detection, meticulously selecting disguises and test centre locations across the country to evade the authorities.
“As with many criminals who commit this type of crime, we believe her motive was financial gain.” It's alleged she connected with her clients over Facebook and edited their identity documents with a picture of herself in one of the wigs, Mail Online reports.
