Liverpool will be aiming to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League against Everton. The Reds take on the Merseyside rivals in Wednesday’s rearranged clash at Goodison Park. A win would see them extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points over nearest rivals Arsenal. But there’s somewhat of an unfamiliar feeling on Liverpool’s training pitches. Arne Slot’s side are fresh off the back of a defeat having slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat to Championship side Plymouth at the weekend.

And while it has not seen their challenge for the title stall, Liverpool will certainly be keen to get back to winning ways. Take a look at what’s happened in the build-up to Wednesday evening’s clash:. Trent Alexander-Arnold could play vs Everton after being spotted in training with the England defender playing a full part in his side’s preparations. And that came after boss Slot confirmed that he was in training, albeit staying tight-lipped over whether he could play. Speaking on Tuesday, the Dutchman said: “Trent has done part of a training session with us yesterday so let’s see how he is today. He will train hopefully with us again today and then we will decide if we take him to the game.”.

Despite Alexander-Arnold potentially being back in contention, the same cannot be said of Joe Gomez. The defender was not in training after picking up an injury against Plymouth. What team should Liverpool name vs Everton? Share your thoughts in the comments below. One man who is in a positive mood right now is Hungarian playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai. And why not given his excellent recent form?. Szoboszlai, 24, has recently netted goals against both Ipswich and Tottenham, even breaking records against the latter. And his form has not gone unnoticed by Slot, who has publicly hailed his midfielder.

And given the positive frame of mind he looks to be in training, it would be foolish to bet against him extending his brilliant form. On the topic of players in excellent form, the same could certainly be said of Cody Gakpo. The Dutchman already has 16 goals to his name in all competitions, his most recent strike coming against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final. And he looks very keen to add to his 2024/25 season haul ahead of taking on Everton. Gakpo has been setting his sights in training and took on a number of efforts during shooting practice.

With Gakpo having his shooting boots on against Everton, Liverpool certainly have a better chance of overcoming their fierce rivals. From one forward to another, Diogo Jota has featured in the headlines ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Goodison Park. The Portuguese was bafflingly linked with Premier League rivals Arsenal. Liverpool will understandably not be keen on selling him any time soon given how much of an impact he has had at Anfield. And Jota doesn’t appear to be bothered by talk over his future either.

He also appeared to be in a positive mindset during training. Having not played a single minute in each of Liverpool’s last three Premier League games, Jota will hope to have done enough to stake a claim this week. Slot was keen to give Liverpool’s young stars an opportunity against Plymouth at the weekend. And that appears to be the same ahead of the clash with Everton. 21-year-old fullback James Norris was spotted playing a full role in training alongside his more senior teammates. The youngster has made two appearances for Liverpool in his career, with the most recent coming as a substitute in the FA Cup during the 2021/22 campaign.

He faces considerable competition from Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas should he want to play but he will hope that he has done enough to at least earn a spot on the bench against Everton.
