Arsenal may be out of the FA Cup but one of their former players was still able to delight fans as he helped his team advance to the fifth round. Among the fourth round ties on Saturday was a thrilling all-Championship affair between Stoke City and Cardiff City at the bet365 Stadium. The Welsh side scored two early goals but the Potters mounted a remarkable comeback to lead 3-2 just before the hour. Rubin Colwill equalised for the visitors soon after and with extra-time unable to settle the score, the match went to a penalty shootout which Cardiff won 4-2.

Former Arsenal defender Calum Chambers was among those to convert his spot-kick for the Bluebirds, but it was another ex-Gunner who went viral. Aaron Ramsey captained Cardiff before being subbed off in the 63rd minute, in his first game for the club since August after recovering from a hamstring injury. Following the penalty shootout, the Wales international was filmed passionately celebrating in front of the Stoke supporters having been on the end of their jeers throughout the match – as has been the case for the last 15 years.

During a Premier League clash between Arsenal and Stoke in February 2010, Ramsey was on the end of a horror, red card challenge from Ryan Shawcross which resulted in a broken leg. The injury ruled the then 19-year-old out for several months and it was a few more years before he was anything back to his normal self on the pitch. Bizarrely, Stoke fans have defended former captain Shawcross over the incident and have berated and booed Ramsey at every given opportunity, including Saturday’s cup clash.

It is no surprise then that the midfielder was keen to revel in their misery on Saturday – even as some incensed supporters threw objects at him. Arsenal fans loved every second of it with one writing on Reddit: ‘Love that Rambo is still dishing it out at the twilight of his career.’. ‘Makes me laugh harder and harder every time that I see it,’ another commented. ‘It’s fantastic. I love every bit of it. The voice over. The pictures of the Stoke fans raging. Love it.’.

Another wrote: ‘They’ve been rattled for over a decade by a guy who did nothing but have the absolute gall to have his leg broken by one of their players. Completely classless.’. ‘Rambo went on to score winning goals in FA Cup finals and win Serie A at Juve. Stoke fans still have to live in Stoke,’ one Gooner jested. Injuries hampered Ramsey’s career at the Emirates but he still managed to make 369 appearances for Arsenal over the course of a decade, winning three FA Cups.

The 34-year-old became known as a Wembley specialist, scoring the winning goals in the FA Cup finals against Hull and Chelsea, as well as the Community Shield win over Manchester City in 2014. He’ll aim to continue Cardiff’s magical run, with the Welsh club set to learn their fifth round opponents on Monday. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
