The US may have produced stars like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, and launched iconic brands like Apple and Amazon, but there's one cultural phenomenon that appears to have slipped under their radar. Christmas crackers, the colourful cardboard tubes that make a bang, provide a joke and deliver a paper hat when pulled apart, are not simply unpopular in the US but are 'very unknown', according to people on social media.

When one social media user 'found out' that Americans 'don't know what a Christmas cracker is' and posted on X (formerly Twitter) that their 'world is crumbling' as a result, they provoked a strong reaction on both sides of the pond. The post read: 'If you're NOT British PLEASE tell me if you do know what a Christmas cracker is bc I just found out Americans don't and my world is crumbling'.

One X user appeared to prove the original poster right when they commented: 'No idea but I'm assuming it's like fireworks or something? I'm European FYI'. Someone else commented in a similar vein: 'I'm a Swede and don't have it and don't really know what it is, but cracker is like a biscuit I think so a Christmas ish biscuit I guess'.

Another tried to clarify the matter by writing: 'American here - they're very unknown still, however, there are a couple stores that sell them and call them Christmas/party crackers. 'My job we sell seasonal crackers so we had thanksgiving ones this year as well'.
