A twisted murderer who killed and sexually assaulted a 10-year-old girl has uttered a chilling final apology as he was executed on his birthday. Kevin Ray Underwood was executed by lethal injection, strapped to a gurney at Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester for the horrific murder of 10-year-old Jamie Rose Bolin. He was killed on the day of his 45th birthday.
Underwood’s gruesome 2006 crime stemmed from a sick, cannibalistic fantasy, a court was told at the time, and he was sentenced to death for the twisted murder. As he lay strapped to the medical table waiting for the lethal injection to be delivered, Underwood said “I would like to apologise again for all the terrible things that I did.".
He then said that executing him on his birthday and days before Christmas was “needlessly cruel” to his family. He added: “I hate that I did those things, and I wish I could take them back.". He was sedated to ensure he remained compliant throughout the procedure. His last meal, eaten on Wednesday night, consisted of a cheeseburger, chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, pinto beans, fries with ketchup, and soda.
The injection was administered at 10.04am local time on Thursday morning, CBS News reported, with Underwood declared dead at 10.14am. His death marked the end of an 18 year legal battle following his unspeakable crime. In 2006 he lured his 10-year-old neighbour into his apartment in Purcell, Oklahoma, before brutally beating her with a cutting board, suffocating her and sexually assaulting her. He then attempted to decapitate the child before strangling her to death in his bathtub.
