Fans of the legendary music group Coldplay are just realising the meaning behind the band's name. A discussion broke out among fans of the Chris Martin-fronted ensemble, with eager Reddit users offering their thoughts on the origins of the group's name which has long intrigued admirers. One fan asked: "I've always wondered what the name Coldplay means. What is your interpretation of their name? Or are you wishing they stuck with Starfish?" Before releasing their smash hit album 'Parachutes', the band was known under the moniker Starfish but opted for Coldplay at a pivotal moment in their career.

One user put forth that the name seems to be a blend of two distinctive words: cold and play. One theory shared on the r/Coldplay subreddit suggested: "I guess I'll start, to me the name Coldplay is a compound word: cold and play. Cold is when you're heartbroken, hopeless, depressed, lonely, etc. Play is a reminder that this life is just a game really. "Everything in our lives are temporary and we should do our best to have fun! Help others who need love and the universe will return it to you when you need it.".

Elsewhere, another fan contributed a piece of knowledge, claiming that the moniker stems from a book closely linked to the band's roots. They wrote: "I read their biography, and I saw this was initially a name of a poetry book of a student of the UCL (The university where the guys met): Child's reflection, Cold Play. "This name was initially taken by Tim Crompton for his band, but he wasn't convinced at all, Chris asked if he could use this name and Tim accepted, because he wasn't convinced at all.

"It hasn't a true meaning. Guy also said that he still doesn't like the name 'Coldplay', but it would be too late for changing it!". A third fan has even unearthed the meaning behind their previous name, Starfish. They penned: "In an alternate reality maybe Coldplay kept the name starfish. In that case the name starfish reminds me how starfish can regrow their limbs after being cutoff. "Helps me remember to always try my best and not worry about the outcome. Everything is temporary and life can always get fixed. Persistence!".

In the Coldplay documentary, A Head Full of Dreams, it was disclosed that the band had chosen the name 'Coldplay' because it "sounded cool". One admirer wrote: "They specifically stated that they took the name (from their friend's band who didn't want the name anymore) because it sounded cool and I'm pretty sure that was the same documentary where Chris said he doesn't even know what it means.". Another added: "I'm not entirely sure it was meant to mean anything. But that doesn't stop it meaning something to you.".
