Getting a good night's sleep is crucial for waking up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day. Comfort is key, and there's nothing worse than spending the night tossing and turning in search of a comfortable sleeping position. Our bedding plays a significant role in our comfort levels when it's time to hit the hay. However, many of us are making a critical mistake when it comes to caring for our bed sheets, which can ruin them and disrupt our sleep.
This is according to experts from bamboo bedding brand Panda London, who have revealed the common laundry mistakes that can wreak havoc on your favourite bedding. Tamir Teitelbaum, director of the company, is aiming to help people improve their sleep hygiene by keeping their bedding as soft, clean and comfortable as possible.
But one step in the laundry routine could be causing significant damage to your sheets, leaving them rough and unpleasant to sleep on. While it may be tempting to tumble dry your bedsheets after washing, this can contribute to skin irritation, warned the expert.
Excessive heat, such as that from the tumble dryer or direct sunlight, can damage the fibres of bedding, causing it to lose its softness. Instead, the experts recommend that bed linen should be air-dried on a washing line or airer, but not in direct sunlight, to preserve its texture, reports the Express.
It's recommended to give your bedding a good wash every one to two weeks, and don't forget to tackle any small stains or spills with spot cleaning. Just a quick rub with a damp cloth and some diluted detergent should do the trick. Once you've got your bed linen all fresh and clean, make sure you store it right to keep it that way. Pop it in a cool, dry place to dodge any musty smells or mildew.
If you want to go the extra mile, breathable storage bags are fab for keeping those pesky dust mites at bay. Or, if you're after a handy hack, just use a pillowcase from the set to keep everything together – especially if it's made of something airy like bamboo, linen, or cotton.
Tamir added: "Establishing a bed hygiene routine for washing bed linens not only ensures cleanliness but also prolongs the lifespan of your bedding products. Using a bed hygiene routine to its full advantage is crucial for creating a fresh and comfortable sleep environment that promotes optimal sleep and overall wellbeing.".
