Despite some being left ‘yelling at their screens’, Netflix viewers are flocking to a new disaster series. La Palma follows a Norwegian family holidaying on the Spanish island who, along with many others, face disaster when a young researcher discovers alarming signs of an imminent volcanic eruption.

Created by Martin Sundland (The Quake), it stars Thea Sofie Loch Næss, Anders Baasmo Christiansen, and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal. The four-part series begins with tourists being killed during a freak accident aboard a boat, with the family – Fredrik, Jennifer and their kids, Sara and Tobias – arriving on the island a few days later.

However, panic quickly sets in after geological researchers Marie and Haukur discover the impending eruption could not only devastate the island but put millions of lives at risk by also triggering a massive tsunami. They then face an uphill battle begging authorities to take action.

Although the series is currently the most watched TV show on the streaming service, it’s divided viewers. ‘Got me on the plot before I watched it. Seemed like it was going to be a good disaster series… until you start watching it. Cheesy to the max. So many unrealistic scenarios and bad acting!’ Madison posted on Rotten Tomatoes, where it currently holds a rating of 30%.
