Actor David Tennant will host BAFTA's latest Film Awards for the second year in a row later this weekend. David, 53, will front the annual film awards ceremony at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday night. He hosted last year's ceremony from the venue too, having taken over as the presenter from Richard E. Grant and Alison Hammond, who hosted the event in 2023. He's set to be joined at the ceremony by nominees including Cynthia Erivo, Selena Gomez and Timothée Chalamet. Whilst award presenters for the occasion are expected to include the likes of James Norton and Vanessa Kirby.
Ahead of David hosting the EE BAFTA Film Awards, the Mirror has taken a look at his life away from the role. It includes an overview of his career to date and some insights into the host's life away from being actor. David is best known for his role on the revived Doctor Who, with him having played the Tenth Doctor on the BBC show. He made his debut as the tenth incarnation in 2005 and initially remained on the show for three series until 2010.
He later reprised his role in the 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor in 2013. More recently, he appeared as the Fourteenth Doctor in a series of special episodes in 2023 as part of celebrations for the show's 60th anniversary. The actor is also known for his roles on shows like Broadchurch, Jessica Jones and Good Omens. He's also starred in stage productions of Macbeth and Hamlet, and his film credits include the How to Train Your Dragon series. His other projects include a podcast, David Tennant Does A Podcast With…, which is set to return for a new series this year.
Last year, it was reported by the Sun that David's 'net worth' is estimated to have reached more than £7 million. Similar figures have been reported elsewhere. David is in a long-term relationship with Georgia Tennant, 40, whom he met whilst on Doctor Who. She played Jenny - who was artificially created from his character's DNA - in the episode The Doctor's Daughter, broadcast in 2008. They later began a relationship and have now been married since 2011. Through their marriage, David is the son-in-law of Peter Davison, 73 - who played the Fifth Doctor - and Sandra Dickinson, 76, both of whom are actors themselves.
Their family now also includes David and Georgia's five children, like Ty Tennant, 22. Ty - who plays young Aegon II Targaryen in House of the Dragon - was adopted by David the same year the BAFTA host married Ty's mother Georgia. David has given insights into his marriage over the years, including having teased that she was influential in him accepting a role on Disney+ series Rivals. The pair have also worked together on projects like Staged over the years.
Last year, it was revealed that David had got a tattoo tribute to his wife Georgia ahead of her 40th birthday. The ink - announced by the tattoo artist as the letter 'G' in the font of Georgia - is said to have been the actor's first tattoo. The couple spoke about their relationship whilst on That Gaby Roslin Podcast together in 2020. When host Gaby Roslin brought up the idea of "fate" having brought them together, both David and Georgia dismissed the prospect.
David teased: "There's that very good Tim Minchin song where he says 'if I didn't have you someone else would probably do. Y'know, that idea that you reach a point of your life where you're looking for someone and it is just sort of chance which version of that perfect partner ambles along. But I certainly feel like I lucked out.". Georgia recalled: "I very much just sort of forced it into happening, didn't I?" She added: "I was very much the driving force of that. I just think that had I not worked quite so hard, it might not have happened." She recalled having decided to "persevere" with pursuing a romance with him.
He said: "That makes it sound like I was resistant though, which is absolutely not what happened. [...] I thought we were an unlikely life partnership, I suppose." Asked why, he brought up that "there's a bit of an age gap," though they both said that it doesn't feel like there is. He went on to say: "Because Doctor Who had run through my life like a stick of rock, to end up marrying the daughter of one of the Doctors, it all felt a bit stupid. that wasn't really likely to happen, was it? So there were a lot of things against it.".
