A family's Christmas has been left in tatters after a washing machine caught fire and destroyed their conservatory. Fire crews were scrambled to a home in Saltash, Cornwall, in the early hours of December 24 after thick black smoke was seen billowing from the property.

Pictures from the aftermath of the blaze show all the conservatory's windows were smashed and the roof completely gutted. Furniture inside the room was scorched beyond recognition, while walls had been blackened by the toxic smoke. But while the conservatory was completely ravaged in the early-hours fire, the rest of the home was undamaged. No one was injured.
A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were made aware of the washing machine fire at around 4.20am. They added: 'A crew from Saltash Fire Station and a crew from Camels Head Fire Station attended the address and the incident command reported that smoke was issuing from the property on arrival. 'Breathing Apparatus crews used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire. A third crew, coming from Liskeard Fire Station, were asked to attend to provide additional BA wearers.
