Call the Midwife viewers were delighted during the festive special when they noticed a surprising guest on screen. The beloved BBC serial treated fans to the first instalment of its two-part Christmas special on BBC One on Christmas Day, with the follow-up set for 7.30pm on Boxing Day on BBC One.
The Traitor's very own Madelyn Smedley surprised some as she assumed a significant role in the veteran drama series. She portrayed Dilys Shaughnessy, a pregnant mother whose family faced eviction just before Christmas Day. In the show, the oldest Shaughnessy sibling, Karen, was being treated for a heart condition at St Cuthbert's and got permission to head home, only to find the family's new living conditions were deplorable, involving a room overrun by rats and lacking both light and heat.
The situation deteriorated further when Pete came down with the Hong Kong flu, quickly followed by Dilys, leaving young Karen to fend for her siblings and try to feed the baby with the last bits of corned beef available. Wales Online reports how fans watching the holiday episode were taken aback but they thoroughly enjoyed Maddy's starring role on the show.
One fan remarked: "Lady from The Traitors in this episode", while another noted: "Not Maddy from The Traitors being in Call the Midwife's Christmas Special". A tweet from a viewer read: "OMG Maddy from #TheTraitors is actually acting in the #CallTheMidwife Christmas special!". Meanwhile, another person posted: "MADDY FROM THE TRAITORS ADDING 'EVICTED WOMAN' TO HER RESUME! #CallTheMidwife".
