A dog owner had his Christmas ruined after his pet stole his glazed ham and wolfed it down - leaving him with nothing to have for his Christmas dinner. Luke Vandore-Mackay said he had spent hours carefully preparing a 3.5kg joint of gammon to have on Christmas Day, and was excited to serve it to his family before his springer spaniel, Huck, managed to steal the meat and ate around three-quarters of it behind his owner's back, breaking an expensive plate in the process. The incident left Luke with no meat to serve with his dinner, and he jokingly declared "Christmas is cancelled" as a result.

Luke, from Dalwood, Devon, shared the exploits of his misbehaving hound on X - formerly known as Twitter - back in 2019 when the incident occurred, much to the amusement of his followers who expressed little sympathy for Luke's predicament. He wrote: "You know how I smoked, then cooked overnight in cider, my 3.5kg gammon? Then glazed it with a cider, mustard and clove syrup – basting it every 10 minutes until it was burnished rich mahogany? Well the f***ing dog has just eaten ¾ of it. So we've got no glazed ham and any minute now the dog is going to puke and s**t all over the kitchen. He also smashed the stupid expensive plate it was on. Christmas is cancelled. Stupid dog.".

Huck soon rued its decision to scoff the carefully prepared ham and had a very unsettled night as it tried to digest the giant snack. Luke, who worked as a chef at the time, was left genuinely concerned for the health of Huck and kept a close eye on him that night. He added: "I am sleeping in the kitchen with the stupid dog in case he dies from too much ham because I love that thieving imbecile. The dog spent the night farting on me and needing urgent toilet breaks in the rain but seems essentially fine and not dead of too much ham." Thankfully, Huck later made a full recovery and was able to embark on a walk through the forest the very next day.
