Many celebrated as it was announced yesterday (January 29) that Princess Beatrice had given birth to her second child. The 36-year-old member of the Royal Family named her daughter Athena, with the tot weighing just 4lb 5oz after arriving several weeks prematurely. The new baby, who is said to be healthy and doing well, is the second child of Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. She was born a week ago on January 22 at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.

The Palace has said that the King and Queen and other members of the Royal Family are delighted at the baby's safe arrival. The birth will no doubt spark a trend for people naming their baby Athena too, however one mum-to-be considering the name recently revealed their one big doubt about it. Writing in Reddit group r/namenerds, they said at the time: "I love goddess names, but I'm not sure if it comes off as 'too much' if you know what I'm saying.

"Considering that, what's your opinion on the name Athena? And if you like goddess names, what are some others that you like?". One person was also sceptical about the name, writing: "I feel like the name Athena is so commonly used in the Greek culture, and relatively rare in other cultures, that I’d assume she is Greek? Not necessarily a bad thing! But it is a lot of name with a lot of connotations and I could see a kid being annoyed by it or feeling like it doesn’t suit them.".

While another said: "I don’t know if I would use it because it sounds so Greek to me and I’m not Greek, but I think it’s becoming more mainstream!". However, others assured the poster that Athena was a lovely name. One person said: "This is actually my little sister's name. Our family is definitely not Greek, but my dad is a fan of the classics and I guess my parents thought the name was empowering. My sister has certainly always been happy with it. She understood at a young age that she was named after a goddess and she's always been very proud of it.".

While another added: "I love it, and regret not using it with my oldest because it would suit her beautifully." A third also chimed in: "My niece has the name and she's the sweetest. It's a beautiful name.". According to The Bump, Athena is a feminine name from Greek origin, with it deriving from the Greek goddess Athena, who personifies wisdom, warfare, and craftwork.
