While some may enjoy Jack Black’s timeless hit Kung Fu Panda and others the London local Paddington, it seems most children are snuggling up on the couch to watch one film franchise in particular: The Secret Life of Pets. The animated film, with voice actors including Kevin Hart and Jenny Slate, first hit cinemas in 2016 and was such a hit that it spawned a sequel in 2019. Now it’s having a revival and pushed Netflix’s top film, Carry On, out of the number one spot.

Action thriller Carry On has been dominating the streaming giant’s top 10 films since its release, with the Taron Egerton and Sofia Carson-fronted film even being dubbed the ‘next Die Hard’. But it appears it is no match for the animated kids films, pushing it down to number three on the charts.

The Secret Life of Pets has long been a favourite, having grossed $875.7million (£699.4million) at the box office worldwide. While the sequel was less successful, grossing $431.2million (£344.4million), it still holds a place in the hearts of viewers today.

With a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel boasts some rave reviews, with critics calling it ‘simple and pleasing’. Eddie Harrison wrote: ‘The Secret Life of Pets franchise makes it look easy to entertain families, with simple, pleasing gags that offer universal appeal.’.
