A Lego display crashed down onto children at a New Year’s Eve celebration injuring 10 people in chaotic scenes. Footage shows a large crowd having gathered at the In the Game arcade on Lowell Street in Peabody, Massachusetts, for the kids event when the plastic display fell on top of them. Families in festive spirits had gathered for the fun event but when balloons were released they knocked over the display on the mezzanine level and landed on people causing 10 injuries according to police.
According to the arcade’s Facebook page, they were hosting a “Noon Year’s Eve celebration” on Tuesday afternoon. And a video shows people eagerly awaiting the colourful balloons being dropped but then a grey display collapses and loud screams follow. Peabody fire Chief John Dowling said that the display fell around 12 feet onto the spectators and 10 people suffered minor injuries with eight taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Mr Dowling said that they initially received a call saying that a ceiling at the arcade had collapsed onto people but added when police arrived it appeared as though somebody had pulled too hard on the display causing it to fall over. A Facebook message from the force read: “Incident at The Inn the Game, 535 Lowell St. Earlier today, a display was pulled down by balloons attached to it, causing it to fall. Ten individuals sustained minor injuries. Eight were transported to the hospital for treatment, while two refused medical transport.”.
It was later reported that they were five adults and three children who went for hospital treatment which were mainly cuts and scrapes. One of the people at the event with her family, Lawren Turco, told WBZ-TV that there was “pure chaos”. Ms Turco said: “We watched the entire balloon drop and had no idea anything happened until we were going to leave promptly following the balloon drop.
