A snowman saved the day when a house went up in flames in Liverpool. Smoke billowed from the bay window of a Victorian terraced house when it caught fire on Wednesday around 11.35pm. Fireworks had been fired at the front door and through a broken window of the property on Garswood Street in Dingle, the Liverpool Echo reported.

Neighbours rallied to put out the flames, including one who threw a snowman on the blaze before firefighters arrived. One man, who was playing Football Manager at home when he heard a ‘bang’, said: ‘The people living there keep themselves to themselves. I was just trying to put the fire out. There was a bed in the front room and that was what was on fire.
‘People were bringing out buckets of water and trying to put it out. Someone tried to get a hose pipe going but that wouldn’t have done much unfortunately. ‘Everyone came out to help and it was nice. Someone threw a snow man on the fire. ‘The man who threw it, I think it was his kid’s snowman but it was a bit of humour shared between us in a difficult situation.’.
One person was rescued from the property and taken to hospital for treatment. Two others fled through the back door. A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, and of criminal damage, police said. Detective Inspector Steve Street said: ‘Clearly this could have had very serious consequences. Thankfully nobody was injured but the occupiers have been left shocked and upset.
