Manchester United forward Antony has taken his former club Ajax to court, claiming that they unlawfully fined him a large amount of money before his move to Old Trafford. The Brazil international made a £85m switch from the Dutch giants to the Red Devils in 2022.

There was a fairly lengthy build-up to the deal being done and the season had already started by the time Antony made his move. As negotiations went on, the winger became frustrated with how long they were taken and missed training sessions, with Ajax fining him for being absent without the club’s consent.

The transfer was completed, with Manchester United announcing his arrival on 1 September, with Ajax taking the fines out of his final pay packet. Antony is now suing Ajax for ‘unlawful’ behaviour, according to Dutch publication AD, with reports suggesting the fines were worth ‘a few hundred thousand euros’.

The case has already started, with the hearing beginning on Monday after Antony had first contracted an arbitration committee six months ago. The Brazilian made an immediate impact after his big-money move to the Premier League, scoring on his debut in a 3-1 win over Arsenal.

He scored again in defeat to Manchester City and a victory over Everton, with his tally standing on an encouraging three goals in his first six appearances for the club. Things went quite spectacularly downhill from there, though, falling out of favour under previous manager Erik ten Hag and remaining so under the current boss Ruben Amorim.
