The debate over which side of the biscuit is coated with chocolate and how it should be held has sparked a division. McVitie’s has now revealed the official answer. Since 1892, McVitie’s has been one of the most popular biscuits in Britain and the perfect companion for a cup of tea. Due to its thickness, it can withstand several dunks without losing the sweetness of the chocolate layer. As the name suggests, the biscuits were originally created to help digestion, specifically to prevent flatulence. However, because they contain a significant amount of sugar, McVitie’s is not quite as healthy as many might assume.
From the very beginning, people have assumed that the chocolate-coated side is the top of the biscuit, as well as how it should be held and displayed. However, it turns out this assumption is actually the opposite. According to the product description, the biscuit is “topped with a layer of its signature silky-smooth milk chocolate.” But this doesn’t necessarily mean that the chocolate is the top part. McVitie’s has now cleared the air once and for all. A Redditor who emailed McVitie’s reported the brand’s response: “For your information, the biscuits go through a reservoir of chocolate which enrobes them, so the chocolate is actually on the bottom of the biscuit, not the top. We hope this helps settle your argument.”.
This isn’t the first time the brand has had to explain how to eat their biscuits, but it still feels a bit wrong to hold the chocolate side from the bottom. Caroline Hipperson, chief marketing officer for the company also said: "So, we can officially confirm that the side with the chocolate on is in fact the bottom of a McVitie's chocolate biscuit. We will, however, leave it up to biscuit lovers everywhere to decide how they enjoy theirs.".
McVitie’s doesn’t just produce chocolate-flavoured biscuits. There are also several other varieties available, including: original, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, and caramel. The classic digestive biscuits are not only a treat but have also become a staple, passed down through generations. Over time, they have become the go-to accompaniment with tea or coffee, a tradition firmly ingrained in British culture. So, next time that you come across a chocolate digestive biscuit from McVitie, make sure tat you actually eat it with the chocolate facing down.
