Peace lilies are renowned for their white or cream-coloured flowers, with healthy mature plants typically producing one to two blooms. However, some varieties may flower more slowly than others. But one green-fingered enthusiast believes she's found a way to speed up the process, using a common kitchen scrap item.
Posting on the Gardening UK Facebook page, Maria Baligasa revealed: "Good morning. Super excited with my peace lily. After putting banana peels, they started to grow flowers faster. It is working so well!". She shared before and after photos of her plant, showing a stunning white bloom emerging after the treatment. The trick likely works because banana peels provide vital nutrients for the plant, including potassium, which experts at Lawn say is crucial for flower production.
They suggest that a lack of potassium could prevent a peace lily from flowering, but this can be remedied by using a potassium-rich fertiliser or adding banana peels or eggshells to the soil. Tesco is the cheapest place to buy bananas, with a pack of six retailing for just 75p - that's only 13p per banana. But it's not just about feeding your peace lily the right nutrients, there are other conditions you need to meet to ensure it flowers. Peace lilies thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. Too much direct sun can burn their leaves, while too little can prevent them from blooming, reports the Express.
