Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas City Chiefs were destroyed by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX - whilst Tom Brady used half-time to remind everyone of his own exploits. The AFC champions, going for their third straight success as history awaited them, failed to fire much of a shot in New Orleans. Mahomes was unable to get his game going and the writing was on the wall at half-time as the Chiefs trailed 24-0.

They quickly fell behind to the Eagles and Mahomes threw two costly interceptions in the first half, including a pick-six to Cooper DeJean. The Chiefs were down 17-0 shortly before Mahomes threw his second interception, which put them in an even deeper hole. At which point Brady could not help but remind everyone about his own Super Bowl exploits, referencing the time he led the New England Patriots to an incredible comeback when they beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in Super Bowl LI. They were 28-3 down at half-time in the game.

Brady, who masterminded a win after trailing by 25 points, said on the FOX Sports broadcast: "I was down more than this against Atlanta. There’s still a lot of football to be played.”. Mahomes was unable to muster the powers of recovery that Brady did and his struggles continued in the third quarter. He finally managed a touchdown as he connected Xavier Worthy, but they were still way behind and unable to get back into the contest. He later found DeAndre Hopkins for his second touchdown throw with 2:54 left in the fourth quarter, making the score 14-40 after a successful two-point conversion.

It was the second times Mahomes tasted defeat in a Super Bowl. The other time was back in 2021 at the hands of Brady himself. The Patriots icon saw out his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and they won Super Bowl LV 31-9 in their own backyard. After the damaging defeat Mahomes, then early in his NFL career, confessed: "They beat us pretty good, the worst I think I've been beaten in a long time.".

He was left to digest another difficult loss at the Eagles added to their success in 2018. Mahomes said: "Credit to the Eagles they played better than us from start to finish. Obviously the turnovers hurt - I've just got to take all the blame for that. "Those early turnovers swing the momentum of the game and they capitalised on them. It was kind of 14 points that I gave them and it's hard to come back from that at the Super Bowl. I just didn't play to my standard and I have to be better next time.".
