Former Manchester United star Paul Scholes has warned that Ruben Amorim's use of debutant Patrick Dorgu means his head could be "fried" just three months after taking the reins at Old Trafford, but doesn't believe the Portuguese deserves the sack. Amorim took over in November after a near-perfect start to the Portuguese season with Sporting CP, including a 4-1 Champions League victory over Manchester City. Since leaving Lisbon, though, he has found it tough to put his 3-4-3 setup into place with United's squad.

The Red Devils have progressed in the Europa League - without the need for a play-off - and are into the fifth round of the FA Cup. They were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by an out-of-form Tottenham, though, and a run of home defeats has left them firmly in the bottom half of the Premier League. The size of Amorim's task has become clear, and the head coach has been limited when it comes to squad-building. January signing Dorgu is the first step, though Scholes questioned the decision not to slot the Dane in at left wing-back.
“Look, I’m not at the point where I’m thinking it’s the wrong decision [to appoint Amorim] because he’s came into a mess and still feels like a mess, but the rest," Scholes said on a fan debate for Sky Bet's The Overlap. "The league form, the way they’re playing now and you talk about cup competitions. As I said before, a big concern for me is that we’ve been crying out for a left wing-back. They buy one [Dorgu] and it tells me his [Amorim] head is a little bit fried and confused at the minute because he plays him at right wing-back and keeps Dalot on the left. What’s going on here?”.
"There are a few things that are concerning. There's a lot of stuff he needs to do, we all know that, especially in transfer windows, but I don't see a core of players. I think a new goalkeeper is needed, possibly two centre-backs, two central midfield players, and two centre-forwards.". Have you seen positives from Ruben Amorim? Have your say in the comments section. Dorgu started on the right against Leicester in the fourth round of the FA Cup, with Diogo Dalot continuing on the left, but Amorim defended his selection. "He played a lot of times for Lecce on the right and the left," the 40-year-old said.
"That’s one of the characteristics we pay a lot of attention to. He was a little bit anxious with the first touch of the ball. This is a different league for him, different speed of the game but he did well. He has pace, he has strength and he is going to improve a lot. We as a team need to play better to help the new guy perform at the right level. "If you have seen the history of Dorgu for his last team he played a lot of games on the right and we have to have wingers who can play both sides like [Diogo] Dalot. So I think it is a really important thing because sometimes you need a left foot on the right side to come in and connect in a different way and sometimes you need a right foot to connect and cross more balls.".
