A survey of 2,000 adults has hooked some fin-tastic insights into the nation's love for a classic fish finger sandwich, with 42 per cent confessing it's their top pick for a tea-time treat. Commissioned by Birds Eye, The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), and Iceland Foods, the research uncovered that to construct the ultimate fish finger sarnie, you need precisely four fish fingers, a slathering of "real" butter, two slices of white bread and a good squirt of ketchup.
The study also indicates that veggies have a place in this fishy feast - with 21 per cent of aficionados tucking lettuce into their sandwiches, 15 per cent adding cheese, and 12 per cent opting for tomato. As for the sandwich architecture, nearly half are partial to slicing their creation sideways to secure whole fish fingers on each triangle of bread, while 30 per cent slice it lengthwise, and nine per cent dare to carve it into dainty triangles.
A spokesperson for the supermarket chain dished out: "We know our fish fingers are not only great value, but they taste good too - making them a quick and easy meal that is guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser for families. With one third of the world's fish stocks overfished, it is more important than ever for shoppers to choose seafood from sustainable sources.".
