Pop star Shakira has been forced to cancel a second concert a week on from pulling the plug on another having been rushed to hospital. The music icon, 48, has been left with no choice but to postpone her show in Medellin, Colombia, due to safety concerns. A roof malfunction at the venue posed a potential hazard, organisers say, and it cannot be fixed before the star is due on stage.
Her first global tour in seven years has faced a number of issues. She was scheduled to perform in Lima, Peru, last as part of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour. However, after suffering from a medical issue, Shakira was advised to seek medical attention. After consulting doctors, she had no choice but to cancel the performance having been hospitalised.
Now, safety worries in her home country means she won't wow the audiences tonight either. Paramo Presenta, who company who run the event, told fans the gig at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium isn't going ahead. "While assembling the stage, the roof structure installed by a local production company sustained damage that could compromise the safety of the artist and attendees," the firm explained.
After her health improved, the Hips Don't Lie songstress was looking forward to playing to thousands of fans tonight. She told fans about her medical emergency and vowed to reschedule. There is no update regarding new dates for either of her two cancelled shows.
In a statement, the singer told fans last week: "I am sorry to inform you all that last night I had to go to the ER for an abdominal issue and am currently hospitalised. The doctors whose care I am currently under have communicated that I am not in good enough condition to perform this evening.
"I am very sad to not be able to take to the stage today, I've been looking forward to reuniting with my incredible fans in Peru. I hope to be released and well tomorrow so I'm able to perform. My team and the promoters are already working on a new date to communicate to you.
"Thank you all for your understanding, I love you all. Shak." Fans have since rallied around the songstress, with one writing on X, formerly known as Twitter: "I hope you get better quickly. Your fans will be waiting here for you." A second went on to add: "Get well soon Shak.".
"Stay strong! We hope you recover soon," wrote a third. A fourth devoted follower typed: "Strength Queen, your health comes first, we send you many good vibes so that you recover, don't worry, your pack will understand. You're going to give a good concert when you're recovered.".
