Individuals living with certain health conditions could be entitled to payments of up to £184.30 a week through Personal Independence Payments (PIP). More than 530 health conditions are supported through disability benefits such as PIP, Disability Living Allowance (DLA), and Attendance Allowance.
However, it's not practical to list all 536 conditions recorded by the DWP during the PIP application process, as an award for any of the benefits mentioned is determined by how the condition affects the individual, not the condition itself. This means every PIP claim is unique to each applicant, which could also help those considering making a new claim to start the process, according to the Daily Record.
PIP payments cannot be backdated, but they do start from the date the claim was submitted to account for the processing time at the DWP. A successful PIP claim can yield between £28.70 and £184.30 each week. The DWP has recorded five main health conditions that lead to PIP claims. As of the end of October 2024, these are psychiatric disorders with 1,406,044 claimants (37%), general musculoskeletal disease with 691,426 claimants (20%), neurological disease with 470,380 claimants (13%), regional musculoskeletal disease with 434,670 claimants (12%), and respiratory disease with 138,534 claimants (4%).
An award for PIP can also result in additional support for housing costs, Council Tax, other benefits and reduced travel on public transport. To qualify, you must have a health condition or disability that has caused difficulties with daily living or mobility (or both) for 3 months, and these difficulties are expected to continue for at least 9 months. Generally, you need to have lived in the UK for at least two of the past three years and be in the country when you apply.
