Netflix has unveiled a harrowing three-part documentary that delves into the murder of 22 year old American vlogger Gabby Petito in 2021, an event that sent shockwaves around the globe. Petito was killed by her fiance Brian Laundrie, who later took his own life, leaving a written confession in a journal. The docuseries features interviews with Gabby's loved ones, providing insights into the events that unfolded, complemented by previously unreleased police bodycam footage, text messages, and glimpses into Gabby's diary entries.
The special premiered on Netflix on Monday (February 17), sparking intense reactions from viewers online, reports Surrey Live. A Reddit user shared their emotional struggle after starting the series: "I'm one episode in and I'm struggling. It's a hard watch.". Someone else shared their discomfort: "I'm struggling to watch because it's just so ugh. He looks and acts so creepy towards her and they just look awkward and uncomfortable together.".
Another viewer remarked on the distressing nature of the series: "I'm on episode 1 and i have a constant sinking feeling watching this, knowing what was gonna happen.". And yet another viewer expressed frustration over the initial law enforcement response: "I'm an episode and a half in and I don't think I'll watch any more. It was annoying that the FBI didn't immediately take the case because of the potential of it being a three state crime.".
One viewer was deeply moved by the documentary, sharing: "Just finished the documentary, and came here to say rest in peace, Gabby. Such a heartbreaking story about a young woman with a love of life taken far too soon. I hope your story continues to inspire those suffering from abusive relationships to get the help that is available.". Another commented after watching the first episode: "I'm only thru episode one, but the it strikes me that all the signs were there.".
They continued with a poignant reflection: "It makes me so sad for her family because she was so kind, so trusting, and such a beautiful person and he was like a spider that slowly drew her into his web.". Gabby Petito and her fiance Brian Laundrie embarked on a fateful cross-country journey across the US on July 2, 2021, in a white van that Gabby had purchased for their adventure, which she planned to document on her new YouTube channel.
Tragically, Gabby went missing on August 27, while Brian returned alone in the van to his parents' home in Florida. Brian himself vanished on September 13, and it wasn't until October 20 that his remains were discovered. American Murder: Gabby Petito is now streaming on Netflix. Obsessed with Netflix?
