Her big break came when she joined Sky Sports News as a presenter, while also working in the same role for Virgin Media and Setanta Sports. That raised her profile with Cates then getting work with ESPN, ITV, STV and Channel 5 in various presenting and journalistic jobs.

In 2016, Sky Sports announced Cates had rejoined them to present their live coverage of the English Football League (EFL). Just one year later, though, she was promoted to present Premier League matches and has remained in that role ever since. Cates married her husband Tom Cates in 2017 – but they separated in 2021 after having two daughters together.
The Scot has started dating again since the split, although it is unknown if she currently has a boyfriend or partner.
