Alan Shearer has explained why he's unsure if Wrexham's Hollywood owners will ever achieve their Premier League dream. Actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have big ambitions for the Welsh side after achieving back-to-back promotions in the last two seasons. The Red Dragons are currently third in League One and battling it out with Birmingham City, Wycombe Wanderers and Huddersfield Town to reach the Championship via the two automatic promotion spots.

However, the Newcastle United legend has questioned whether financial regulations could prove a major barrier to Wrexham's ongoing success. He made the admission on The Rest is Football podcast alongside co-hosts Gary Lineker and Micah Richards. Shearer was the first to give his thoughts after a query about Wrexham's future potential was raised by a lifelong fan of the club. "I think the answer to that is, we're not quite sure," the Premier League's all-time leading scorer said. "That's because of how far they'll be able to go in terms of finance, spending and all of that, because of the PSR (Profitability and Sustainability) rules.".

Wrexham's meteoric rise under Reynolds and McElhenney has partly been driven by spending large sums to attract players from high divisions. Star striker Paul Mullin and ex-Luton midfielder Elliot Lee, son of Shearer's former Newcastle team-mate Rob, are among those to have dropped down the leagues to join the club.

Their achievements have also been spurred by the popularity of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary and some large-name sponsors like TikTok and United Airlines. In addition, the club recently announced the arrival of new minority investors as the Allyn family from New York came on board after making their fortune in medical manufacturing.
