Three days of chaos for Barclays bank customers are coming to an end, as technical problems have now been resolved. Pending transactions should have gone through and customers should now be able to make payments and withdraw cash from ATMs following the widespread disruption. It all kicked off on Friday morning, with users receiving the ‘BG010 error’ while trying to use the Barclays app or online banking services.

This meant customers had no access to their money on the first payday since Christmas for millions of workers. But amid the chaos, social media posts suggesting ATMs were spitting out ‘free money’ started doing the rounds on X and TikTok. Clips show lengthy queues at ATMs, including in London, with people reportedly being blocked from accessing one of the machines by police officers. These videos have not been verified by Metro, as it’s not clear why these people are queueing at the ATMs or if they have tried to get their hands on ‘free money’.

It’s also not clear from the footage, shared by a popular X account with more than 350,000 followers, whether police were actually in attendance in Stamford Hill, central London. Barclays are still working on updating customers’ available balance, which is one of the areas affected by the glitch. If a Barclays customer was to successfully withdraw money from an ATM, it’s likely that their balance wouldn’t immediately update to reflect their new, lower, balance.

This could be the cause of confusion and the source of social media posts claiming Barclays customers were able to withdraw ‘free money’ from ATMs. But with many good things in life, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is – and in this case, anyone who did withdraw cash from ATMs over the weekend will see their balance corrected in the next couple of days. A Barclays spokesperson said: ‘We are working on bringing balances up to date for some of our customers and addressing any outstanding issues.

‘We are very sorry for any disruption and will ensure that no impacted customer is left out of pocket. ‘We are keeping our call centres open for longer this weekend and we will be proactively contacting customers who may be vulnerable.’. That spokesperson firmly shot down any possibility of getting free money from ATMs, telling Metro: ‘Customers can use their debit cards to withdraw cash from ATMs, up to their daily limit.

‘Any funds will be debited from their account.’. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk. For more stories like this, check our news page.
