Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign Sverre Nypan, despite interest from Manchester City's sister club Girona. The 18-year-old has earned comparisons to Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, having starred for Rosenborg in his native Norway last season. Nypan made 18 goal contributions in 33 appearances across all competitions for Rosenborg as they finished fourth in the Eliteserien.
And according to a report from the Guardian, Arsenal are 'hopeful' of agreeing a deal to sign the midfielder. The report states Aston Villa and Tottenham are also interested in Nypan's services, while he was seen in Erling Haaland's private box for City's 3-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday.
Nypan was with his agent, Rafaela Pimenta, and the City Football Group owned Girona are rivalling Arsenal for his services. The report adds that Rosenborg are demanding an initial £10million fee for Nypan, plus 'significant add-ons'. Arsenal are in the market for midfield reinforcements, with the likes of Thomas Partey and Jorginho potentially set to leave the club with their contracts due to expire at the end of the season.
"We have certain situations with contracts expiring," Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said earlier this month. "We can renew those contracts like we have done in the past. We are always actively evolving the squad and understanding what the players want to do when they finish our contract together, and we have to be prepared.
"At the moment we don't have them [new signings], we are actively trying to find the best possible solution but we will have to wait and see what we can do. Obviously we have lost two massive players for us in the frontline and we need some support there.".
