Aston Villa have reacted furiously after Jhon Duran’s red card was upheld. Several senior members of the Birmingham club have railed against the authorities after the Colombian striker's three-match ban was not overturned. Duran, 21, was dismissed at St James’s Park on Boxing Day after referee Anthony Taylor adjudged the striker had stamped on defender Fabian Schar as the duo chased a loose ball.
Villa boss Unai Emery was critical of Taylor in the immediate aftermath. He felt the match official should have consulted VAR before reaching a decision. And the Spaniard’s trusted lieutenants—president of football operations Monchi and director of football operations Damien Vidagany—were quick to express their feelings.
Legendary talent spotter Monchi, who famously worked with Emery at Sevilla before transferring his allegiance to Villa, wrote on social media: “We can understand a mistake because to err is human, but to insist on the mistake only creates doubts about the system.
“I come from a place where the motto is NEVER SURRENDER. So here we say the same thing, we will not surrender and we will continue fighting for our club. Up the Villa.”. Vidagany also has a past association with Emery and has followed him from Spain, working alongside Monchi to secure the best talent available. He also took to his own social media account, writing: “Three matches for Jhon Duran.
“You know what? The most damaged here is not Villa. Is the credibility of the ones that made this decisions. (Sic) We are going to keep fighting, nothing will destroy us and we will overcome all this unfair decisions. And we will behave like gentlemen.”.
