Hundreds of people have been left unable to access their Barclays account – just in time for payday. Customers began reporting issues using the mobile banking app and making and receiving payments since 10am. By 12.15pm, 1,270 customers said they had encountered issues with Barclays’ online services, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks internet outages. The number has since lowered to 755.

Around 55% of the reported problems relate to mobile banking, while 38% and 7% relate to online banking and bill paying respectively. Barclays said the bank is ‘having some problems’ with its systems. More than 10 million people use Barclays’ digital services, with one-third only using mobile services to manage their finances. One frustrated Barclays customer wrote on X: ‘Absolute joke. I’m so sick of Barclays. I’ve been with you for about 20 years and seriously thinking of switching banks! Can’t even get onto the status checker!’.

Another added: ‘An absolute joke on payday, people have wages to access and bills to pay, get it sorted, before 3pm!’. In response, Barclays said on X: ‘We’re sorry if you’re having issues with some of our services at the moment.’. ‘You may have trouble using some features in our app, Online Banking as well as payments in and out of your accounts,’ the firm added in a statement. ‘We’re also unable to help you over the telephone or our Message us service.

‘You can still use your cards and cash machines as normal.’. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk. For more stories like this, check our news page.
