Not many celebrities go on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and leave out of pocket themselves… well, unless they’re Anton Du Beke. The Strictly Come Dancing judge, 58, did the charitable thing of pledging to donate his own money to a chosen charity should he get a question wrong—£15,000 in fact.

Unfortunately for Anton, he did get the question spectacularly wrong, resulting in not only humiliation on a national scale but also having to eat his words and take a trip to the bank. Appearing on the Jeremy Clarkson-hosted game show, Anton aimed to raise funds for The Sick Children’s Trust. The dance star made it all the way to the £32,000 question, a feat certainly not to be laughed at given the almost impossible nature of some of the show’s questions in the past.

However, he was left stumped by the question: Which Tony Award-winning musical features a mash-up called Elephant Love Medley?. There were four possible answers: Hairspray, The Book of Mormon, Moulin Rouge!, and Six. Anton initially used the 50/50 lifeline, leaving him with The Book of Mormon and Moulin Rouge! to choose from. But, still unsure, he opted to ask the audience for assistance. With 77% believing The Book of Mormon to be the correct answer, Anton trusted his instincts and selected that as his ‘final answer’, but not before the theatre lover declared: ‘It’s gonna be a nightmare if I go home on this!’.

Still not totally convinced he was doing the right thing, he added before Jeremy revealed his fate: ‘I’ll tell you what I’m gonna do: I’m gonna go with The Book of Mormon and if I get this wrong, I’m gonna give the charity £15,000 of my own money.’. Alas, Jeremy had to reveal that the bold move had, indeed, ‘cost’ Anton 15 grand of his own cash, which will be added to the £1,000 he automatically won after reaching the first safety net.

The choreographer and novelist removed his glasses and laughed in defeat as he said: ‘You wait until I tell my wife. “How’d you get on?”, she’ll say.’. “Oh, they cancelled the show, it was a disaster”,’ he joked. ‘I’m afraid this is going to go on television,’ Jeremy reminded him before the dance show judge repeated that he would donate his own earnings to charity as a consolation prize.

Despite the noble gesture, though, it didn’t prevent viewers from poking fun at Anton, taking to X to absolutely rinse his performance… much like he does on Strictly, really. ‘That was a masterclass in how NOT to use your lifelines, Anton du Beke’, scolded robdriscoll1. ‘The audience are absolute FOOLS and so is anton du beke . surely this is his wheelhouse ???’, blasted kamaal_____, expecting Anton to have known the answer instantly.

‘Anton Du Beke not knowing a question about musicals on millionaire is a bit of an embarrassment is it not?’, AndrewCarg85248 also laughed. Fortunately, it wasn’t a terrible night for everyone on the show, as First Dates star Fred Sirieix managed to win an epic £64,000. Meanwhile, Emmerdale actress Roxy Shahidi took home £16,000 for her charity. This weekend’s celebs had a tough act to follow, in fairness, as last weekend, Sir Stephen Fry made Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? history.

Utilising the ‘ask the host’ lifeline, thanks to Jeremy’s knowledge, he scooped a whopping sum of £250,000. Sir Stephen then emerged as the highest-scoring celebrity since Richard Madeley managed £125,000 in 2022. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? airs Sundays on ITV1 and ITVX. Got a story?.
