Boxing fans unanimous in response to Tyson Fury retirement before Anthony Joshua fight

Tyson Fury may have announced his retirement, but boxing fans are far from convinced that he actually means it. Fury released a short video on Instagram on Monday afternoon to say he was hanging up his gloves for good. The 36-year-old has lost his last two fights against Oleksandr Usyk and appears to be keen to give up instead of fighting Anthony Joshua this year.
"Hi everybody, I'm going to make this short and sweet," Fury said. "I'd like to announce my retirement from boxing. It's been a blast, I've loved every single minute of it. I'm going to end with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side. Get up!".
Fury previously announced his retirement after beating Dillian Whyte in April 2022, but ended up returning to the ring just six months later. He made similar proclamations in October 2016 and August 2017 following mental health problems and drug use allegations.
If he really means it this time, then ‘The Gypsy King’ will bow out with a record of 34 wins, two defeats and one draw from his professional career. But while there were a few comments from fans congratulating him on his career, the majority of the posts under his video on Instagram were of a very different nature.
Boxing can be a cynical business where self-promotion is nearly as important as the fighting itself – and Fury’s followers think he’s just drumming up interest in a fight against Joshua. “See you in 6 months lad,” one fan wrote. “Strategy to gather momentum for the AJ fight,” another added. A third concluded: “Fury vs Joshua announced within the next 6 months”.
