A body has been recovered from a river close to where two missing twin sisters were last seen in Aberdeen - and police have informed their family. Henrietta and Eliza Huszti, aged 32 and from a set of triplets, were last seen near the River Dee in Aberdeen on January 7. Their disappearance sparked a major search and rescue mission with officers still struggling to find the pair more than three weeks on. In an update released by Police Scotland today, the force said it was alerted to a body seen in the river, near Queen Elizabeth Bridge, at around 07:55am on Friday.

Officers arrived at the scene this morning where they said enquiries were ongoing, before revealing in a seperate update that the family of Henrietta Huszti were informed that a body was recovered from the river. In the early hours of January 7 - the day the sisters vanished - they texted their landlady from the bridge area to say they would not return to their flat. Officers have been treating the case as a missing persons inquiry and not a criminal investigation.

Eliza and Henrietta moved to Scotland from Hungary around ten years ago and were described as being social but preferred to stay at home. Their brother Jozsef said the pair seemed "fine" in the days before they vanished. Police Scotland said in a statement this morning: "We were made aware of the body of a person seen in the River Dee near Queen Elizabeth Bridge in Aberdeen around 07:55 on Friday. The body has been recovered from the water and enquiries are ongoing.".

On Monday, the force announced they would end their search of the river and harbour area, but that a wider operation to find the sisters, which included Duthie Park, was ongoing and would include costal areas north and south of Aberdeen. They also said there was nothing to suggest any criminality involved with their disappearance. Superintendent David Howieson previously said: "We have carried out a significant trawl of public and private CCTV footage as we try to establish the sisters’ movements.

“Several hours of footage are being examined by a dedicated team of officers and we have so far established that Eliza and Henrietta were at the footpath next to the River Dee at 2.50pm on Monday January 6. Although the sisters didn’t engage with anyone else at this time, the area would have been busy and we are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen them.". Investigating officers added there had been "no evidence" of the women leaving the immediate area and nothing to suggest "suspicious circumstances or criminality".

The sisters visited Victoria Bridge - where they were last seen - around 12 hours before they disappeared, with CCTV footage showing them walking through the city centre, via the Union Square shopping centre, and then back to their flat in the Charlotte Street area. On the night they vanished, they were seen again on CCTV spending five minutes at the footpath and Victoria Bridge, and they did not engage with anyone else.

A text message was sent from Henrietta's mobile phone to the sisters' landlady at about 2:12am on the day the pair were last seen. The message said they would not be returning to the flat. The phone was then disconnected from the network. Their landlady found the sisters' personal belongings at the flat and she then reported her concerns to police. In a statement released via Police Scotland earlier this month, the women's family said: "This has been a very worrying and upsetting time for our family. We are really worried about Eliza and Henrietta and all we want is for them to be found.".
