Along with Fernandes, United will also be without Manuel Ugarte when they take on Newcastle, who are in flying form after dismantling Aston Villa on Boxing Day.
Ruben Amorim did not appear to acknowledge Fernandes as he trudged off the pitch - and United's head coach bemoaned his sending off after the game.
But even though the Portugal star seemed shocked when referee Tony Harrington gave him his marching orders following a high boot on Nelson Semedo, he can have few complaints.
