Chappell Roan was named Best New Artist at the Grammys and used her acceptance speech to deliver a powerful message. She defiantly stated: "Labels, we got you, but do you got us?" The singer also pledged to fight for better compensation and welfare for artists, demanding that "labels and the industry profiting millions of dollars off artists would offer a liveable wage and healthcare, especially to developing artists.".
The Pink Pony Club artist shared her personal experience of being signed as a minor and struggling to find work and afford health insurance during the pandemic. She said: "If my label would have prioritised artist health, I could have been provided care by a company I was giving everything to, so record labels need to treat their artists like valuable employees with health insurance and protection.".
Fans online were full of praise at the speech. One user on Twitter/X said: "What I love about Chappell roan is the fact that she is not afraid to say anything that other artist are so afraid that they will ruin their reputation but not her and I love that for her.". Chappell's Grammy win follows a year of significant growth, with her popularity skyrocketing on TikTok and after supporting her friend, Olivia Rodrigo, on tour. Her song H-O-T-T-O-G-O has become famous for its iconic dance routine, which she teaches to her live audience.
The 67th annual Grammy Awards saw Benson Boone, Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, Khruangbin, RAYE, Chappell Roan, Shaboozey, and Teddy Swims nominated for the Best New Artist category. Each artist had a standout year, with Charli XCX making it a brat summer and Sabrina Carpenter seeing multiple songs hit no. 1. The Grammy's website describes the Best New Artist Category as one that "highlights how an act pushes creative boundaries and challenges a saturated industry with outstanding - and sometimes surprising - music.".
Previous winners of this prestigious award include Victoria Monét, Olivia Rodrigo, Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera. The evening left viewers in tears after a touching performance by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. They sang a touching version of California Dreamin and were treated to a standing ovation following their set. Their brilliant performance came after a heartbreaking reel showing the true devastation felt by so many following the California wildfires. At least 29 people lost their lives in the tragedy, while thousands saw their properties burn to the ground. Fans on Twitter/X were emotional following the touching moments.
One user wrote: "This is emotional bruh so sad for this who lost their homes to the fires #Grammys.
